Bolting Broccoli

“Why is my broccoli flowering?”

That was the question I heard most last week.

It is because of the very hot weather. But it isn’t the air temperature that causes broccoli to bolt. It is the hot soil.

Broccoli likes it cool around the roots. That’s why we can start it early in the garden.

The best way to grow broccoli in summer is to make sure you are watering frequently and that the broccoli plant is well mulched.  A thick layer of mulch will help keep the roots cool and lessen the possibility of the broccoli bolting.

If the main head has already bolted, remove it. Water, mulch and some side heads should develop.

See you in the garden, Natalie
